Mitten Tree Tradition Continues

The Shirley Tranum Mitten Tree is up in the Narthex where it is serving as a collection spot for gifts we give each year to kids in need at local schools. On the tree you will find paper ornaments that double as gift tags. Each tag has a written description of a particular wish or need for a local child. Please take an ornament, and then place your wrapped gifts under the tree with the ornament/gift tag attached.

This year we are also giving gifts to local families served by Lutheran Community Services (LCS). Ornaments for these families will be in the shape of Santa Claus. If you give to families served by LCS you have the option to leave your gift under the tree by December 10 or to deliver it in person at their event on Thursday, December 14.

When you take an ornament/tag, please indicate that you have done so by filling out the requested information on one of the clipboards on the table next to the tree.

The Mitten Tree also serves as a collection spot for other gifts.

  • For area students we’re collecting mittens, hats, scarves, socks, underwear and sweatpants. Set the mittens, hats and scarves on the branches of the tree: eventually the tree will be whimsically decorated with colorful warm winter wear. Set the socks, underwear and sweatpants in the more sober and modest location under the tree in the wrapped box labeled for that purpose.
  • For prisoners we’re collecting adult-sized socks. Please place these in the wrapped box under the tree labeled for that purpose.
  • For infants in need we’re collecting new infant clothing. Please place these in the wrapped box under the tree labeled for that purpose.

Gifts of all kinds need to be brought in by Sunday, December 10. For more information, contact Sharon Caffey at Sharon@gsolympia.org .
